CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- If recently retired Carl Edwards chooses to run for Congress, don't expect a campaign sign in Denny Hamlin's front yard.

"I can't vote for him," Hamlin joked during Wednesday's Q&A at the NASCAR Media Tour.

"Would he be a good candidate? I don't know, what does he know about politics?" Hamlin asked. "I'd say he knows a lot about Missouri or Kansas. That's where he's from, right?"

Terry Smith, a political science professor at Columbia College in Missouri, said Edwards will run against Claire McCaskill for a US Senate seat in 2018. According to a report from Lee Spencer of Motorsport.com, Edwards said he currently doesn't have any plans to run for election.

And if he chooses to do so, we'll never know if he's a candidate the defending Daytona 500 champion would support.

"I can't vote for him. Can't," Hamlin said. "But I would keep my ballot anonymous, I would not say who I would vote for."
