Evolution is everywhere in sports.  And, oftentimes, it brings with it, unexpected benefits.

We’ve talked a lot on this show over the years about how NASCAR’s playoff system has benefitted the late-season schedule.  It’s added storylines to races that wouldn’t have existed under the old system.

It’s made us more invested in the outcomes of those races than we would have been when the season-long points standings determined the champion.  When the finishes of two or, maybe three drivers really mattered towards the end of the year.

Now, you’re hearing the same sort of dialogue with the expanded college football playoffs.  Games that wouldn’t normally have mattered to a national audience in mid- to late-November, all of the sudden are getting attention as teams to scramble to enhance their resumés for a playoff bid,

We’re living in an age of short attention spans in a world of a thousand things seeking to grab our attention.  If you don’t adapt and evolve like NASCAR and others sports have, you’ll lose your fan base and a lot of potential new fans.
