The margins are there for a reason. It’s been interesting listening to the folks who think Martin Truex, Jr. was treated unfairly by NASCAR when he was busted for speeding at Bristol. After all, he was a playoff driver and going less than a mile and hour over the limit.
It reminds me of when my kids were really young and I refereed their basketball games. I had parents criticize me for calling kids for stepping out of bounds. I told them that basic rule #1 is that the game is played inside boundaries and if we don’t teach them that from the outset, we’re doing them a disservice.
So, what’s the point in having speed limits on pit road if we’re going to randomly enforce them based on who is speeding and by how much over?
If it’s just the receiver’s toe on the line do we make it a catch? If the ball is foul by just a couple of inches, do we go ahead and give the batter a home run? Is there really such a thing as a “little pregnant”?
No. You either are or you aren’t. Fair or foul. In or out. Lines are drawn, limits are set. And, rules need to be enforced according to them.
